The Art of Being God-Sent

Hey everyone, I hope you are doing well. Today I want to do something a little different, (we're taking a quick break from our business series) and I hope you'll tag along. Today I want to talk about a phrase that is often used in the Nigerian space especially in the Christian sphere. "You are God-sent" or "That person is a God-send"

There's nothing wrong with the phrase but I want to talk about the mentality behind it (at least what I think it is)

When I was young, I often heard this God-send phrase when someone was giving thanks to another person for providing something they needed usually at the time it was needed too. And I used to think, "Wow. This person must be a really spiritual somebody o. For God to send you. How awesome!" I only found out later that sometimes the people who did the giving were not necessarily all that spiritual. Don't get me wrong, they were very nice people and most times Christian or church-goers but they didn't always see visions of angels telling them to give this to that person or they dreaming about their gift. Some people provided when they could and some just feel led to give even if they themselves may not have had enough at the same time.

As I pondered the phrase, I realized that unlike the days of the prophets when God only spoke to people who were considered higher ranking in spirituality, priesthood or holiness, God speaks to everyone now. He has direct access to each one of his children just like we have direct access to him.

What does this mean? This means that just like God led the prophets and Israelites to do some crazy things, he can lead us to do the same today. Just like in the early church explained in Acts 2 where it seemed almost too good to be Christian for no one lacked anything, God is leading his people to do the exact same thing today. One verse that caught my eye was the verse that said that some people sold their possessions so that they could use the proceeds to feed brothers and sisters in Christ who had little or nothing. If that happened today, some might call the giver brainwashed or possessed while the brother or sister on the receiving end would probably see the person as God-sent (or ask what job they were doing😅)

And especially in today's culture where it is becoming popular to put yourself first, it is becoming a rarity to see "God-sent acts"

Why is this happening? I do not have the answer but I can say that part of it is that we have for too long kept the title of God-send for the few. We are so used to viewing God-send acts as rarities that they have become that. But that is a problem and especially in the area of giving and generosity because when we start to change our perspective from seeing radical acts of love as what they are to start feeling that they might be too extravagant, the spirit of culture which says "Hoard" begins to take over. Just like God who gave the most precious thing he had to us, we should have no limits on what we can give to others when we are called to. I know this might sound strange to many but it is true. Most of the things that we treasure will eventually fade away and if they serve another brother or sister better than us right now, it is our duty to give away, not out of pride, boasting, or spite but out of love because they are just that, brother and sister in Christ.

As Christians, we are all God-sent because every child of God has been commissioned by Jesus to be an ambassador of the kingdom and a reflection of Jesus on the earth. The Jesus who gave his life on the cross. That is the kind of radical love we are supposed to share with our brothers and sisters. So when someone in the church can't pay their child's school fees, we take it upon ourselves, when someone needs surgery, we are there, when someone needs food or a place to stay, we are there.

And I know that right now, many of us have objections like "but what is the main goal of the church?" or "the church is not a charity" or "how many people can the church help, what if we do it for one person and then 10 other people come?"

To all the questions and concerns, I would say we should remember the main goal of the church, to be Christ's ambassadors on earth. Ambassadors go on missions but they also have a team that supports them. This team is what makes them function properly; their secretary, press handler, editor, speechwriter, etc. If all these people's needs were ignored because of the ambassador's main mission to represent, then the ambassador will eventually not be able to function properly. Just like the ambassador, the family of God and the church were created because it is necessary for believers. It is our home-base. Our mission control. Just like Adam needed Eve, Christ needs the church, not just one or two denominations but the whole body. Each of us is an ambassador and our team is the rest of the church.

But if the whole body cannot function because members of the team feel left out, are too sick to preach, or too worried about school fees to hear anything else from God, then how will we properly represent the kingdom?

We cannot represent God to just the world, we have to represent God to even members of the family of God. And if 10 others come, is there anything that is too hard for the Lord to do? If he provided for the 5000, he will provide for the 10. So remember the next time you see someone in need, especially a brother or sister in Christ, you are a God-send.

Thank you for reading today💝

I hope you have been inspired to be an ambassador of the kingdom not just to the world but to your team too.
