Glimmer walked into the living room to see Joey comfortably lying on the couch. Her eyes shot daggers at him. Too bad he was too engrossed in what he was reading. She stormed into the adjoining kitchen and started opening and closing cabinet doors with an intensity that should have pulled off their hinges.

Joey peeked from behind his book with curiosity. What now? He thought to himself.

As if noticing his gaze, Glimmer walked into the living room and took a seat. "You know those people who always say come out and say, 'Oh gee thanks, I know I don't deserve this whatever because there are others who are better than me'?" she mimicked. "Well, I'm those others!"

Oh! She wants something. Again.

"You know, you can try being thankful for what you do have. ," Joey answered from behind his book. "For example, not everyone is as protected as you are. I mean, you know it's not automatic right?" "Well, that's why I have you, is it not?" Glimmer spat back. Joey's shocked face was hidden by his book. "Or are you trying to say you cannot protect me?" she continued, paying no attention to him. "I know you can, but sometimes I wonder." Joey put down his book and sat up. "Of course, I can. You know that's not a problem for me," he replied. "So why are all these things happening to me?" Glimmer whined. "Because I'm trying to get your attention, for God's sake!" his loud voice startled Glimmer. She had not expected his laissez-faire attitude to wear off quickly.

Joey closed his eyes and took deep breaths. He opened them again and spoke gently, "Lately, I've realized you just want me so I can protect you from him. Or so you can achieve your goals. You need a job. You want to travel. You need money. You want friends." He caught her eyes. "What happened to us?"

I thought you loved me.

"Well, it wouldn't be so hard if you just gave me what I want." Glimmer muttered, averting her gaze.

Joey looked at Glimmer in surprise. "Wait, so if everything around us crumbles, you would walk away?" Because that's what I want to know."

Love is supposed to be an exchange, but these days, it feels more like I'm the one emptying myself out for you, and you're just so absorbed. I gave you my wealth, my power, my protection, my gifts to get your attention, but you fell in love with them instead of me. Everything else except me."

"That's not true, Joshua."

"Seems like it to me. Who am I to you without all those things? Do you know me? Do you even want to?" Silence filled the room.

"Excuse me." Joshua announced as he got up and left the room.
