Since Friday, most if not all all areas of Lagos have experienced non-stop rain, and we all know what happens in Nigeria when the rains come especially in Lagos, Flood. But this time, its worse due to climate change. Of course, many people were expecting the normal accumulation of water on the road but they were overwhelmed by the amount of water on the roads, especially the major ones. In fact, it was so bad that cars were literally being carried away by the water on some bridges. Now, we all know what the causes of flooding are so what are we still doing wrong. The answer is simple. We Lagosians need to stop throwing away our dirt on the roads, in the gutters and literally every open space. I have talked to people who told me that it was just one plastic bottle or they could not start looking for bins or even said that its the government's job. Well, while those are very interesting excuses. I will tell you this. One, have you heard of the proverb ''little drops of water make a a mighty ocean''. Now think, if every Lagosian dropped just one plastic bottle every day, what would we have, 20 MILLION PLASTIC BOTTLES!!. That is bigger than some people's village land area. How would we feel if our villages were covered in plastic bottles. Not very happy I suppose. Another lifesaver of an excuse is the phrase "there's no bin around where I am". Now even though, it is true, the Lagos State government is working on that. Please, lets wait till we get home or reach the nearest bin meanwhile you could wrap the bottle or wrapper in a nylon. Simple. I know that its annoying to be holding nylons all around or have them in our bags but its even more annoying when floods spoil our cars, our shoes and even enter our compounds. I mean who wants to be sweeping every weather forsaken time it rains. So I think its safer, easier and cleaner to go for Option 1. And last but not least, it's the government's job or What is Lawma supposed to be doing. Now, we all know that Lawma is supposed too clean the environment but now we have a much more interesting cleaning service in the company of Visionscape and I think most of us can agree that they are not as effective as they are supposed to be. Unfortunately, when we compound the problems of their inefficiency by littering, we never have the upper hand. Besides, think about it, our homes, offices, schools and communities are the ones that get flooded. Is it really worth it? So when you think of it, they don't have to care about y'all that are getting soaked or sweeping compounds because of their inefficiency as long as they get paid but also if we want to be considerate, there are so few of them and so many of us, other citizens. How are they supposed to clean up after 20 million people. Please, they are people's parents too. So I say we save ourselves the trouble and just pick up after ourselves. Trust me it's not that hard. Thank you all for reading and probably getting angry with me but seriously let's think about it and start changing our mindset. Have a blessed and rainy week.
